9 May (1653) Birth of Cardigan Town Council – where are the balloons?

  • 9 1994 (Llun.) Dinner to celebrate Cylch Cinio Aberteifi 21 years old in Castle Malgwyn.
  • 9 1953 (Sat.) Opening ceremony of the Netpool by Roderic Bowen and Col Harewood Williams
  • 9 1860 (Wed.) Borough Surveyor was instructed to put up an oak post to the turnstile beyond Netpool Well. The turnstile was popularly known as Barney’s Gate. Mr Barnaschoni , watchmaker and jeweller lived at top of St Mary’s St., took a daily walk to Netpool.
  • 9 1653 (Mon.) Cardigan Town Council came into operation.

8 May (1922) First operation at Cardigan Hospital

  • 8 1946 (Wed.) Reopening of Capel Mair vestry after refurbishment.
  • 8 1922 (Mon.) First operation performed at Cardigan Hospital by Sir John Lynn Thomas on an 18 year old St Dogmaels man. The operation saved his life.
  • 8 1879 (Thurs.) Hope Chapel foundation stone laid at 3.00 p.m by David Davies MP. Devotional service conducted by Rev Dr Rees, Swansea.

6 May (1888) Birth of Professor Lenny Owen

  • 6 1888 (Fri.) L V D, Lenny Owen, professor of Nottingham University (d. 1952) born No. 2 Lion Terrace, son of Mr and Mrs John Owen, solicitor’s clerk. Leonard Victor Davies Owen was educated at Llandovery School and Keeble College Oxford, where he gained a first class honours degree in Modern History in 1911. During the First World War, he served as captain in the 5th Battalion of the Oxford and Bucks Light infantry. He lectured at Bangor and Sheffield University before joining University College Nottingham (now the University of Nottingham) in 1920 to become Professor of History. He was honorary president of University College’s History Society, a member of the Council of the Pipe Roll Society and a member of the Lincoln Record Society. Professor Owen retired from the University of Nottingham in 1951 and died in February 1952.

3 May (1824) Cymreigyddion established in the Angel

  • 3 1824 (Mon.) Cymdeithas Cymreigyddion Aberteifi was established at the Angel. Meetings were held on 1st Wed in each month. Present in the first meeting: Thomas Bowen, esq.,; vice pres Stephen Williams; chairman Rev John Herring, minister at Bethania; treasurer David Mathias; sec James Jones; poet J M Jones (Ioan Cunllo)

20 April (1949) Handel’s ‘Messsiah’ at Bethania; death of Revd Eseia Williams

20 1949 (Wed.) Handel’s Messiah at Bethania. Soloists included Jennifer Vyvyan; Gwyneth Morgan; Trefor Anthony; and Hubert Hughes; Idris Griffith, Llanelli, organist; Conductor Andrew Williams. Notable especially for the collapse and death of Revd Esaia Williams, Bethania in the pulpit while addressing the congregation.

14 April (1879) 100,000 bricks for the dockyard at Pembroke Dock

  • 14 1879 (Mon) CARDIGAN BRICK, TILE & POTTERY WORKS are glad to be able to announce that Messrs. Miles, Woodward and Co. have again secured the contract for the supply of Her Majesty’s Dock-yard at Pembroke for the ensuing year, and have already received an order for 100,000 bricks which has to be completed forthwith. The contract in-cludes the supply of all pipes and pottery required in the dockyard during the year.

‘Many would like the Revd Ben Owen to explain more fully his statement in last week’s issue that prime Cardigan beef and mutton are sent to London and frozen Argentine meat and horse flesh are sent to Cardigan.

Are we to understand that Cardigan butchers have supplied horse flesh to regular customers as rationed meat?’
